Description:

This is a discussion of logic and thinking and its relationship to observation. More specifically this deals with the philosophy of Epistemology (the philosophy of knowledge and truth). I am basically an empiricist. In philosophy generally, empiricism is a theory of knowledge emphasizing the role of experience in the formation of ideas. Empiricism was the philosophy which formed the basis for the scientific method. It is the foundation of modern science. This leads into a discussion of religion, agnosticism, theism and atheism.

This is why we have the scientific method. It is a method of testing the conclusions that scientists come up with (using logic) called a hypothesis. They then test the hypothesis by comparing the idea to the real universe (observation) in the form of an experiment. The scientific method is a method of testing a logical conclusion.

Once can certainly draw correct conclusions though logic but obviously people draw incorrect conclusions too. Garbage in = garbage out. If the ideas that you are using to draw your conclusion with are incorrect, the answer will always be wrong regard of the correctness of the logical method you used to put the ideas together.

Some philosophers have attempted to formalize how ideas are put together in order to draw a correct conclusion. These are formalized systems of logic. If the ideas aren't put together correctly, the conclusion could be wrong. This is what a logical fallacy is; how you put the ideas together weren't correct form.

Logic isn't so much a method of determining if something is true or not. It is method of drawing a conclusion or new understanding based on ideas which are already known. Everyone thinks and draws conclusions, this is called reasoning.

I see... I'm still convinced that there is truth to be proven with only logic, but your method of observation with logic seems to work just as well. Anyway, thanks for clairifying your point of view for me.

There are other ways to determine the value of truth of something. 1) is it observable 2) does it predict future phenomena which can be observed 3) does it work 4) does it benefit mankind 5) Does it organize other known data.

People complicate this. If I can look at rock and see it's a rock, then I consider that the rock is true. This is knowing through direct experience and that's good enough for me. I could doubt the existence of the rock, logically try to disprove it, think philosophical ideas all day about if the universe exists or not, but at the end of the day, it doesn't change the fact of the rock.

Accidentally deleted your first comment. Sorry. Um, perfect triangle, can't exist in the real universe, one side will be a few atoms longer, it can approximate an absolute but cannot achieve it. It exist as mental concept only. However, triangles do exist in the real universe and can be experienced.

but then how do you explain how we know what we know? Or, how would you explain how we know that logic and observation are the key to the truth? I heard a pretty good explaination once about the answer to that and it only involved using logic...

yep there is. You come up with the idea through logic and then you observe they universe to see if you idea is right or not. This is the essence of the scientific method. Deriving the theory is the logical step, experimentation is the objective step. People come up with ideas all the time that have no basis in reality, by comparing reality and your experience to the idea, you can test the idea.
