Description:

Robert Burns was born on the 25th of January, 1759 in a cottage in Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland. He died in Dumfries on 21st of July, 1796 at the age of only 37. Yet he left behind a huge poetical, lyrical and literary heritage which now has him ranked amongst the top ten poets of all time. This was quite a remarkable achievement for someone born into humble peasant farming stock who toiled throughout his life working poor farms and fighting poor health. Lionel McClellend of Moffat performs his own version of the famous Robert Burns ode to humanity. Is there for honest poverty That hangs his head, an' a' that The coward slave, we pass him by We dare be poor for a' that For a' that, an' a' that The rank is but the guinea's stamp The man's the gowd(gold) for a' that What though on hamely(homely) fare we dine Wear hoddin grey(course wollen cloth), an' a' that Gie(give) fools their silks, and knaves their wine A man's a man, for a' that For a' that, an' a' that Their tinsel show an' a' that The honest man, though e'er sae poor Is king o' men for a' that Ye see yon birkie(fellow) ca'd a lord Wha struts an' stares an' a' that Tho' hundreds worship at his word He's but a coof(fool) for a' that For a' that, an' a' that The man o' independent mind He looks an' laughs at a' that A prince can mak'(make) a belted knight A marquise, duke, an' a' that But an honest man's aboon( above) his might Gude(good) faith, he maunna( must not) fa' that For a' that an' a' that Their dignities an' a' that The pith o' sense an' pride o' worth Are higher rank that a' that Then let us pray that come it may (as come it will for a' that) That Sense and Worth, o'er a' the earth Shall bear the gree( have priority) an' a' that For a' that an' a' that It's coming yet for a' that That man to man, the world o'er Shall brithers( brothers) be for a' that

The human capacity to hate, kill and war is still sadly alive and well, sex crimes and paedophiles roaming and raping the innocent, poverty and famine, greed and opulence, I have real trouble assigning the values of this piece to the human race I see today. Yes, a great vision of humanity, maybe humanity evolved a few hundred years into the future, otherwise still a good video and a nice piece of writing by a great Scot.

alacas69, even if in RB day he spoke out continously against the elite and unfairness, so i dont think we should idealize those days.. it was a very rough time in scotland, with no heating and very hard ground to try to get your food and living from. and yet he still spoke from his heart and people heard.. can that not still happen today? are there not still good people out there, who have something to say?

I think there are definitely people out there with good things to say, one of the troubles is whether people will care, listen or simply 'zone out' with the usual distractions, of which there are more today than ever before. Humans have not evolved all that much really over the past few thousand years and sadly base animal instincts still seem prevalent in many over the more beautiful and heart-warming potential human characteristics. We can always hope though!

8. 12. 07 taragolden, I marvel at this masterfully executed video which encapsulates the modern dilemma of mankind between the riches of some with the incrediblly poor circumstances of those who have not. Couched in the language of the brogue, your video speaks volumes about the necessity for persistence and hope now and in the future. I loved this. I watched it twice. Your translation helped considerably when I viewed it the 2nd time. All my best "cat"
