i would remove funding for all those elite schools like kings and geelong grammar...let them pay for it themselves...

As a PhD student under Howard I am forced to live below the poverty line. PhD students are not entitled to any financial support (in contrast to anyone who is unemployed) yet many need to study fulltime. Why is it that future researchers into cancer, engineering, mental health and so on are forced to live without financial support? Would an ALP govt change this? Previous responses: Julie Bishop: no response Michael Johnson: I don't respond via email Stephen Smith: I'll get back to you

How about making university education easier for our kids? It is now $250,000 for a medical degree in most Australian universities. So our kids end up with a huge HECS debt while they are studying and their parents have to try and support them through the four years med training because Howard axed Austudy so that it is now only available to a few people. No bloody wonder we are running out of Doctors. (68% of our current medical practitioner workforce are baby boomers.)

In 2004/2005 private schools received $4,515 per student from the Federal government. In the same year public school received a mere $1,051 per student. That's a $3,464 difference. There are 28 students in my year three class. If funding were equal per student no matter what school you went to, my classroom alone would have an extra $96,992 per year. Approximately $1.3 million for my school. How about a fair EQUAL go for public students. Can Labor provide this? I hope so...

The public school I teach at has approximately 350 students. We can only budget $2000 this year for Creative Arts (Dance, Drama, Music, Visual). That is $5.71 for each students for the year. This works out to be a pitiful 3 CENTS for each (Dance, Drama, Music, Visual) per week. What am I supposed to teach with that? Increase funding to public schools.

I agree with the posters above, you really have to fix up the Higher Education sector, focusing in particular on science, health, mathematics and engineering. The sector has been starved of federal funds, full stop. "Targeted", piecemeal, conditional grants to universities, that are granted at the sole discretion, and personal whim, of Minister Bishop, is not how public funding should be administered.
